Sinulog 2016

At the start of the year, I declared that 2016 would be the year I would do things that I really really wanted. One of those things was to travel. The past few months have been filled with travels. So, I want to share with you my travel diary.

January 15-19, 2016

My best friend (Jaja Magsakay) and I went to Cebu to experience the Sinulog festival. Although there were some complications, it turned out to be such a fun trip with a lot of experiences and lessons learned.

We stayed in my dad’s friend’s (Tito Patrick) house. He was very hospitable. We were able to save a lot of money since he fed us and took us to places with his car.

On our first night there, Jaja and I went to a party called Lifedance. I guess we were too early because when we got there, there weren’t that much people. But as the night approached, people kept coming and coming. Sanay kasi sa maaga na party, Davaoeñas eh. It was very memorable because I met one of my Instagram Idols, @benjstagram92. Then, we partied until we got tired. At 2 am, we were nearly sleeping on the ground, so we decided to go home. We instantly regretted our decision the day after because we found out that Dj Snake played his set when we left.

On our second day, we went to Ayala to buy some shirts, whistles, and head ware. After that, we met up with Tita Wilma and Kuya Nikko in Red Planet where they were staying. That  night, kuya Nikko accompanied us to another party called Paintensity. It was not that easy to find the party since we didn’t really know where we were. So, we just decided to just go where the people were going. Honestly, it was a night of 70% walking and 30% partying.

On our third day (Sunday), Jaja and I decided to watch the parade. The parade wasn’t really moving but the floats were really nice. Before I went to Cebu, people kept telling me that we should go to the street party since it was really fun. But, posts in Facebook said that they banned the street parties. Still, we were very curious and wanted to experience it ourselves. So, we decided to ask where it was. We found out that it was in a place called Mango Ave but locals warned us not to go there since it was really crowded and a lot of people there fainted. Despite the warnings, we decided to go. When we got there, we didn’t have a clue where we were. We felt out of place and really awkward. I guess we loosened up a bit when somebody wiped paint on our faces and strangers greeted us “Pit Señor”. We found a really good spot and people were actually partying on the streets! It was pretty crazy actually. We met people and we kept wiping paint on people passing by. It was such a fun experience and I can honestly say that it was the highlight of our trip. That night, we went to a party called Sinulog Invasion. Again, we didn’t know where it was but we kept following the people. We found the party but we were really tired, so we drank Red Bull. I got to take a picture with LA Aguinaldo and we met people from Davao and Dumaguete. After the party, we decided to ride a habal-habal going to Marco Polo where we were staying for the night.

On our last day, Jaja and I decided to take a break from all partying. So, we went to the mall instead. It was both our first time to go to SM seaside. It was a pretty big mall and quite confusing, actually. We went back to Tito Patrick’s house after and rested. The next day, we went back to Davao.

Things I learned in this trip:

– Not everything goes according to plan.

– Parties in Cebu don’t start early.

– Follow the crowd.

– Stick together.

– Always bring water.

– Red Bull makes you really tired after a while.

– Take chances.

– Famous people are just around the corner.

– Don’t wear flats when walking inside a huge ass mall.

– Always apply sunblock.

– Don’t be afraid to talk to strangers.

– Habal-habals don’t cost P200.

– Fireworks are great.

– 7-11 lose a lot of money during Sinulog.

– Buy another Sinulog shirt because the one you’re going to use during the party you’re probably going to have to throw away.

– Paint can be removed with soap and water.
